Monkey D Luffy hit Gear 5 extra hard this year, despite trying to achieve massive success on the TV charts for two decades. Although it didn’t suit Carmi, 2024 is not just a yes-man under the roof of The Bear Chef’s restaurant, but also a cheerful member of the Straw Hat crew, traveling around the world with the lovable anime pirate.
According to the Internet Movie Database’s (better known as IMDb) mid-year evaluation of the top 10 rated shows of 2024 so far, the Toei Animation production has successfully outpaced every other non-animated competitor subject to mainstream popularity.
The One Piece anime adaptation received the highest average IMDb user rating in 2024, topping the list of the best shows of the year for January 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga series, running since 1999 and spanning over 1,100 episodes, this TV anime received an average score of 9.08 on a 10-point scale.

Topping the top score charts, it was one of only two animated shows to achieve this feat this year. As the only Japanese animation title on the top 10 list, it was alongside American superhero animated series X-Men ’97, which occupied third place with an average 8.62 rating.
Meanwhile, several other blockbuster American shows, such as FX’s Shogun and The Bear, Amazon’s Fallout and The Boys, lagged behind the high-ranking anime. FX titles have been ringing victory bells for quite some time, especially with Shogun and The Bear. Both shows also made history at the Emmys, with the latter earning a record-breaking 23 nominations in the comedy category, while the former’s feudal Japan setting led all shows with 25 nominations.
As far as the OTT network wars go, the underrated TV channel FX, a subsidiary of Disney Entertainment Business Segment, came out ahead in the competition against the major streamers – Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. Overall, Disney took three out of ten spots on the best-rated shows chart.

Amazon Prime Video, HBO/Max and Netflix shared their stats with two entries each. Surprisingly, Netflix’s titles made the top 10 list rather than dominating the roster.
