Actor Olivia Munn has talked about living with a unique situation: Trichotilomania. This is a mental health disorder that includes your skull, eyebrows or urges to remove hair from other areas of your body. For some people, such as Olivia Munn explains, the task of pulling hair gives a temporary sense of relief or satisfaction. But this often occurs after feelings of shame, crime or embarrassment.
Long -term side effects of this mental health anxiety include permanent hair loss. Research suggests that some individuals may also eat all or parts of hair. These people may have a risk for a trikobojar – according to NIH, a mass of hair swallowed in the gastrointestinal tract.
Common signal
While this hair-pulling disorder cannot be noticed in many patients, there are some signs of trichotylomania that raise an alarm:
- Skull or missing eyelid/bald patches on eyebrows

Can it be treated?
A trichotylomania patient can consult a primary care doctor, a dermatologist, a psychiatrist, and/or a licensed clinical psychologist. It can be managed by cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and habit reversal training, as well as medical techniques such as drugs.
