What is diphtheria? Everything you need to know
Diphtheria is a highly contagious infection that can affect the nose and throat, and sometimes the skin. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening.
Diphtheria, a vaccine-preventable disease, is caused by strains of bacteria called ‘Corynebacterium diphtheriae’ that make toxins. The disease can lead to breathing problems, heart rhythm problems, and even death.
Diphtheria is spread mainly by coughing and sneezing, or through close contact with an infected person, and through physical objects (toys or clothing) used by a person infected with diphtheria.
