Tokyo: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday expressed confidence during his visit to Japan that India will have a stable government for 15 years or more. Long-term political stability helps the government take ‘bold’ decisions. Speaking at the Nikkei Forum on India-Japan Special Strategic Partnership here, Jaishankar said that ‘reformist and visionary leadership backed by a strong political mandate, which in a democracy has to have a majority in Parliament, results in ‘bold decisions’.’
Will the upcoming elections affect India’s foreign policy? Commenting in response to this, the External Affairs Minister said that ‘India is gearing up for important general elections in May this year, in which more than 950 million citizens are ready to exercise their right to elect the government. Hundred percent, we (BJP) will have a stable government for 15 years. It could be for 20 years or more.
Jaishankar said, ‘Every country, every society is different, but what may be applicable to India is not necessarily always the same for other countries. But our own experience is that lack of stability in politics or lack of majority in Parliament to take bold decisions is challenging.
We have had a strong political mandate for the last 10 years and we hope to continue this. So you know, in many cases, we have seen decisions that were debated for years, but suddenly we got the ability to implement it. If you have reformist, visionary, committed leadership and that leadership is supported by a very strong political mandate, then it becomes much easier to take bold decisions.
The minister said political stability means policy stability because anyone betting big on India would want to know what India will be like in the next 10 years. The investor, whether domestic or foreign, will hesitate if he does not know what the situation will be like a year from now or six months from now. So when you evaluate the risk of a country, political stability becomes a very important part of it.
BJP leader Jaishankar further said, ‘Fortunately, it has been good for us for the last decade, and I am very confident for the next decade.’ The Minister on Thursday addressed the 16th India-Japan Foreign Minister’s Strategic Dialogue with his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa and participated in the first Raisina Round Table Conference, an important step towards enhancing Track Two exchanges between India and Japan. Is step.
