Vinod posed as a student and gained unauthorized entry into the NIT campus and a heated argument took place in Jayachandran’s office.
In an unsettling turn of events, a former classmate attacked Jayachandran, an assistant professor at NIT Calicut, on the campus, leaving the faculty member with minor injuries. The incident, reported by Onmanorama, came to light when Vinod, a resident of Salem, Tamil Nadu, entered the NIT campus in the guise of a student. The motive behind the attack is not known and Vinod is currently in police custody.
Shortly after the incident, Jayachandran, a faculty member of the civil engineering department of NIT Calicut, was admitted to a private hospital and is currently stable. Vinod posed as a student and gained unauthorized entry into the NIT campus. On reaching the Civil Engineering Department, a heated argument broke out in Jayachandran’s office. Enraged, Vinod resorted to violence and used a pen-knife from the professor’s desk to stab him in the neck and stomach. Jayachandran was rescued by security guards who immediately intervened to control the attacker.
Authorities are now struggling to understand the motive behind Vinod’s attack as he has given contradictory statements during police interrogation. Vinod, who initially claimed to be an NIT alumnus, later claimed that both he and Professor Jayachandran were classmates doing their PhD under the same guide at IIT-Madras. According to an official quoted by Onmanorama, Vinod alleges that the attack was carried out by Jayachandran by withholding some of his medical certificates, a claim that has not yet been confirmed.
Police sources say Vinod claimed to have completed the course with Jayachandran, after which the two parted ways. Vinod secured a position as an assistant professor in a private engineering college in Andhra Pradesh, while Jayachandran got a position in NIT. The complication deepens when Vinod, referring to financial support from Jayachandran during his recent cardiac arrest, claims that the necessary documents for his institute were with the professor. When Jayachandran refused to give up these documents, Vinod, in a fit of rage, stabbed him. Police investigation is revealing layers of this shocking incident.
