Panaji, Designing the jersey and sports kit for the Rajasthan Royals IPL team is another proud achievement for Jodhpur-based NIFT, which was earlier recognized for making the uniforms of the marshals at the new Parliament House.
GHS Prasad, director of the National Institute of Fashion Technology Jodhpur, recalled how a team of NIFT faculty members, along with students, designed the jersey for the Rajasthan Royals team for this season, highlighting the state’s royal heritage.
On the campus of the institute, the jersey is proudly displayed by the management, showcasing the talent nurtured by the students taking admission in this central government supported institute.
“We are proud to be a part of these prestigious projects,” Prasad said.
“The uniforms of the Parliamentary Marshals have created a sense of Indianness, while the Rajasthan Royals jersey has attracted attention in both fashion and cricket circles,” he said.
Dr. Aditi Mertia, assistant professor at NIFT, said the cricket project came to them through a direct approach from the Rajasthan Royals management, who wanted a jersey that not only reflected the spirit of the team but also gave a touch of Rajasthan’s heritage.
“They wanted NIFT to be part of the creative process. They gave us broad ideas – one of them was related to the Vijay Stambh of Chittorgarh – and asked us to work on that topic,” he said.
A team of 10 to 11 students and three faculty members worked for several months, and the creativity was perfected with precision as the group went through nearly 100 design iterations to reach the final form.
“The process was intensive. We had frequent meetings, frequent reviews and his team even visited our premises to check samples. It took three to four months of collaborative effort to finalize everything, including the players’ kits,” he recalled.
Asked whether everyone who designs jerseys follows cricket, Dr Mertia said, “Some people do.”
