The University Grants Commission (UGC) said in a public notice issued on Wednesday that NET-score can be used by students for admission to Ph.D. Program in place of entrance examinations conducted by various Universities/HEIs.
UGC Secretary Professor Manish R Joshi said that a national entrance test for PhD will help the students. As a part of implementing the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), an expert committee was constituted to review the provisions for admission to the National Eligibility Test (NET).
Based on the recommendations of the committee in the meeting held on March 13, 2024, it was decided that from the academic year 2024-2025, students can use NET score to get admission in Ph.D. Program in place of entrance examinations conducted by various Universities/HEIs.

Following are the three categories where NET candidates will be declared eligible:
- (i) Ph.D. Eligible for admission. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor
- (i) Ph.D. Eligible for admission. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor
- Eligible for admission to Ph.D. Program not only for JRF award or appointment as Assistant Professor
The public notice stated that the NET score will be declared in percentage along with the marks of the candidate to use the marks for admission to Ph.D.
UGC also informed that candidates qualifying in Category 2 and 3 will be given 70% weightage for test score and 30% weightage for interview for admission to Ph.D. Program. Admission will be on the basis of combined merit of NET marks and marks obtained in interview/oral examination. The marks obtained by the candidates in NET in Category 2 and 3 will be valid for a period of one year for admission to Ph.D.
