Nepal’s Prime Minister lost the trust vote in parliament on Friday as the largest party in his coalition government withdrew its support, forcing him to step down after 19 months in power.
Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday failed to secure the support of more than half of the members of the lower house of parliament, the House of Representatives, needed to win the vote.
He had to move a confidence motion in Parliament after his main ally in the government, the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist), last week decided to withdraw its support and form a new coalition by joining hands with the country’s largest party, the Nepali Congress.
The alliance has agreed that Communist Party leader Khadga Prasad Oli will be the new prime minister.
Dahal had been leading a shaky coalition since becoming prime minister in December 2022, as his party finished third in an inconclusive election. But he formed a new coalition and became its leader and prime minister.
Since becoming leader he has had to seek confidence votes in Parliament five times due to differences among his coalition partners.
This was his third term as prime minister of the Himalayan nation since his Maoist group ended armed insurgency and joined mainstream politics in 2006.
Dahal, also known as Prachanda or “the fierce one”, led a violent Maoist communist insurgency from 1996 to 2006. More than 17,000 people were killed and the status of many others remains unknown.
The Maoists gave up their armed rebellion, joined a UN-assisted peace process in 2006 and entered mainstream politics. Dahal’s party won the most parliamentary seats in 2008 and he became prime minister, but he stepped down a year later amid differences with the president.
