New Delhi. More than 80 crore people in the country are using internet on some device or the other. However, now the use of internet is not limited only to video calls, UPI payments and online shopping. There are more than 800 million (80 crore) internet users in India and 86 percent of them are availing audio and video services on over-the-top (OTT) platforms, a report said on Tuesday.
According to the Internet in India Report 2023, more than 90 percent of Indians use the internet daily and spend about 1.5 hours on the internet on an average. However, according to reports by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Kantar, the growth rate of Internet users is now increasing at a slow pace.
82 crore people are active internet users
According to this report, by 2023, 82 crore people in the country were actively using the Internet. It is clear from these figures that about 55% of the country’s population has used the Internet recently. The report also said that about 53 percent of the population using the Internet was from rural areas.
Use of OTT platforms increased
It has been said in the report that due to increase in internet penetration, there has been a huge increase in the demand for OTT subscription. Apart from digital payments, online shopping and social media, demand for OTT has also increased rapidly. Apart from this, lakhs of new customers are also joining online gaming platforms every year. Consumption of mobile data has also increased due to streaming apps.
OTT became the third largest service
After audio video calling and social media, OTT has become the third largest internet-enabled service. According to the report, about 62 crore users use the Internet for calls and about 57 crore users for social media.
Apart from mobile, other devices like smart television, fire stick, smart speaker and Google Chromecast are being used most for entertainment. In 2023, approximately 20 crore people were using these devices.
