Millions of candidates who appear for NEET UG 2025 are eagerly waiting for their results, ready to release soon. Before announcing the results, it is important to understand the tie-breaker criteria for the candidates, which will play an important role in determining the rank and explaining the scorecard. All updates on NEET UG 2025 results will be available on the official website, neet.nta.nic.in,
The National Examination Agency (NTA) appoints a tie-breaking rule when two or more candidates get the same marks in NEET UG exam. This systematic and transparent process facilitates determining the identity of the All India Rank (AIR) and the topper. The NTA outlines these rules in its official notification annually, clarifying how the relationships are solved to decide Air 1 when the candidates have the same score.
The tie-breaking process for NEET UG 2025 includes the following criteria:
High marks in biology: A high -marks candidate will be ranked high in biology (botanical + zoology). Maximum marks: 360 (90 questions, each value 4 digits).
High marks in chemistry: If the marks of biology are tied, then candidates with high chemistry marks take predictors. Maximum marks: 180 (45 questions, each value 4 digits).
High marks in physics: If marks are also tied in biology and chemistry, a candidate with high physics marks is placed at a high position. Maximum marks: 180 (45 questions, each value 4 digits).
Low ratio of wrong answers: If the marks are the same in all three subjects, then the candidate with the least wrong answer in all subjects is given preference.
High ratio of correct answers: If the number of incorrect answers is also tied, a candidate with a more correct answer gets the top rank.
For example, if two candidates, Ravi and Sonia score 700 out of 720, their rank will be determined as follows:
- Ravi: Biology (340), Chemistry (170), Physics (190)
- Sonia: Biology (350), Chemistry (160), Physics (190)
In this case, Sonia will be ranked high in biology due to her high digits. If their biology marks were tied, the mark of chemistry would be considered, followed by physics marks, and if necessary, the ratio of the incorrect/correct answer.
Last year tie-breakers
In previous years, there are remarkable examples of tie-breaking:
- In 2021, Mrinal Buildri (Telangana), Tanmay Gupta (Delhi), and Kartika Ji Nair (Maharashtra) all scored 720/720. Based on the tie-breaking rules, Mrinal Kutteri was awarded Air 1, which is likely to be due to high digits or less wrong answers in biology or chemistry.
- In 2024, 17 candidates scored 720/720. After tie-breaking and adjustment of a physics question directed by the Supreme Court, all 17 candidates were initially given the same rank, but this number was later modified.
