The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Thursday said the increase in the cut-off and number of toppers in NEET-UG reflects the competitive nature of the exam. “The cutoff scores are determined each year based on the overall performance of the candidates,” it said.

“The cutoff scores are determined each year based on the overall performance of the candidates,” NTA said in the statement.
“The increase in cut-off reflects the competitive nature of the examination and the quality of the examination,” it said. High performance standards The marks obtained by the candidates this year are not more than 100%. The cut-off and average marks (out of 720) of the qualified candidates vary every year.
The NTA further informed that the number of candidates who appeared in 2023 was 20,38,596 while the number of candidates who appeared in 2024 increased to 23,33,297. “The increase in the number of candidates naturally led to an increase in the number of high scorers due to the larger pool of candidates,” the official said.
Grace marks to compensate for loss of exam time
On the grace marks given to some students, the NTA said that some petitions were filed before the High Courts of Punjab & Haryana, Delhi and Chhattisgarh by the NEET-UG, raising concerns about loss of examination time during the conduct of the examination at some examination centres.
“The concerns raised by the candidates regarding loss of exam time through writ petitions and representations were addressed and 1,563 candidates were compensated for loss of time and the revised marks of such candidates range between -20 to 720 marks. Out of these, the marks of two candidates are also 718 and 719 respectively due to compensatory marks,” the official said.
The NTA official said that analysis of the CCTV camera footage showed that the sanctity of the exam was not compromised.
‘New NCERT textbooks were used to prepare questions but…’
On allegations of blatant implementation of grace marks, an NTA official told PTI that the question paper was set using new NCERT textbooks. However, some students had old NCERT textbooks.
“We also received a memorandum on this issue, following which the NTA awarded five marks to all students who had opted for one of the two options. Due to this, the marks of a total of 44 students increased from 715 to 720, resulting in an increase in the number of toppers,” the official said.
