Sources said the real loss due to easy question papers and reduced syllabus is to the coaching institutes, which take advantage of the complexity and vastness of the syllabus as students then prefer to take their services.

Is NEET (UG)-2024 Is the controversy brewing this time because of coaching institutes, which may suffer losses this time due to reduced syllabus and easier question papers? Government sources are pointing to this, claiming that coaching institutes, whose students have performed poorly this time, are at the forefront of the uproar.

The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it has decided to withdraw the grace marks given to 1,563 candidates who will now have the option of appearing for the re-examination being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The Supreme Court has not stayed the counselling process. However, government sources say that some coaching institutes are casting doubts on the entire examination though there is no evidence of paper leak.

Sources said that coaching institutes whose students performed poorly in the NEET (UG)-2024 exam have lost their image among their student groups, even though the exam was relatively easy, and they are at the forefront of the protests. They also claimed that other coaching institutes are silent. This time, the NEET (UG) exam saw about 15% fewer courses, the number of applicants was around 23.3 lakh, and the question paper was relatively easy.

Why did the students perform better?

Sources said the real loss from easier question papers and reduced syllabus is to coaching institutes, which take advantage of the complexity and comprehensiveness of the syllabus, as students then seek their services. Government sources said that in the case of NEET (UG)- 2024, the simplified syllabus affects coaching institutes, as fewer students feel the need for extensive coaching. The cut-offs were higher this year as 20 extra minutes were allotted to complete the exam.

Sources said that due to the shorter syllabus, students can complete their studies on time, giving them enough time for intensive revision and this leads to better performance and higher marks. There is no upper age limit to appear for the exam and there are unlimited attempts, resulting in higher marks in subsequent attempts by experienced candidates. Sources said that tougher question papers benefit the coaching industry, but rural students who cannot afford expensive coaching will not be able to compete in such a situation.

Are coaching institutes unhappy with the new act?

The government has also enacted the stringent Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act this February, which lays down detailed guidelines covering several key aspects of coaching institutes. The Act defines coaching centres, specifies conditions and required documentation for registration, issues related to fees, outlines infrastructure requirements for setting up coaching centres, establishes a code of conduct for coaching centres, emphasises the importance of mental health, advocates prioritising support from counsellors and psychologists within coaching centres, not batch segregation, and maintenance of records.

Sources said this might anger coaching institutes who are now trying to undermine the credibility of NTA through the NEET-2024 controversy.
