For the first time, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has said it has sent a hip-hop song into space. On July 12, an inspirational message from Missy Elliott and the lyrics to “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” a song from her platinum-record debut album, traveled nearly 158 million miles (254 million kilometers) into space, according to NASA.
The US space agency said the message was sent by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
“Missy has a track record of incorporating space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals into her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something so out of this world is a true fit,” said Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division, Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
Additionally, the agency pointed out that the song was transmitted at the speed of light, and the radio frequency signal took about 14 minutes to reach the planet.
Speaking about her song being broadcast on planet Venus, “I chose planet Venus because it symbolises power, beauty and empowerment and I am so happy that I have the opportunity to share my art and message with the universe!”
“Beep beep, who’s got the keys to the Jeep? VR-R-R-R-R! For the first time ever, we broadcast a hip-hop song #OutOfThisWorld,” NASA wrote on Instagram.
Netizens were quick to react to this and one user said, “Honestly, couldn’t think of a better alternative than this”
“So technically Missy Elliott is the world’s first interstellar artist,” another wrote.
“You go out into the universe Missy!!! Smile!!! Well deserved!!!”
“It’s nice to see this from NASA”
“Great, now Venus is colder than Earth”
“I wonder how many aliens intercepted that song and are now trying to decipher what it means. They’re all probably calling us aliens. LOL!”
“Missy Elliott is still moving forward”
“Missy! Always on the next level and breaking new ground”
Some users criticized Missy Elliott as the wrong choice and suggested that there were other better musical options available.
“This was a very wise decision! If there are any hostile aliens on Venus, this will discourage them from coming here!”
“So many greats, I mean great music from the history of music, from the whole of mankind and you pick a pop song by Miss Elliot”
One user asked, “How much did this cost taxpayers?”
Another user also suggested, “I think @Eminem’s song #Spacebound would be a great song to play as well”
“The Venusians are banging on the wall. “Slow down! We’re trying to sleep.””
“How sad that even NASA is flattered by this.”
