Every religion has different customs and rituals related to life and death. Any country or religion not only respects the rituals of other religions but also follows them. But this did not happen in Sri Lanka. There, instead of burying the Muslims who died of Covid, they were forcibly cremated. This step of the Sri Lankan government was strongly criticized everywhere. The government is now going to apologize to the Muslims of the country for this act.
The Sri Lankan government said that it will formally apologize to the country’s Muslim community for the forced cremation of Muslim individuals who died of Covid-19. The Sri Lankan government implemented the controversial cremation policy during the Corona epidemic due to health concerns.
In 2020, a mandatory order was issued for the cremation of COVID-19 victims, depriving Muslims and several other minority communities of their religious rights. However, the order was repealed in February 2021 amid growing international criticism.
According to a cabinet note, the Sri Lankan Cabinet in a meeting on Monday approved a proposal to apologize to the Muslim community for the order imposed in March 2020. It said that the Cabinet has decided to apologize to all communities on behalf of the government. The Cabinet also decided to bring a law to prevent the recurrence of such controversial steps. The Cabinet has also approved a proposed law on the burial or cremation of dead bodies on the basis of religion. Attention has been drawn to bringing a law in it that will allow a particular person or relatives to choose the burial or cremation of the dead person.
The Muslim community had protested the forced cremation policy and some even left the bodies of their loved ones in hospital morgues. Members of the Muslim community had said that they were either forced to allow the cremation or it was done without their knowledge. Cremation is forbidden in Islam.
