The upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections on July 12 are crucial, especially after the ruling Mahayuti alliance’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections. Currently, the effective strength of the assembly has come down from 288 to 274 as some members have become MPs, some have died and some have been suspended. Now, new members will be elected by the MLAs and it will be a big loyalty test for them as both the ruling alliance and the opposition will vote by secret ballot.
Of the 11 MLCs retiring on July 27, four are from the BJP, two from the Congress, and one each from the NCP, Shiv Sena, Shiv Sena (UBT), Peasants and Workers Party and Rashtriya Samaj Party.
After the results of the Lok Sabha elections, there are rumours that around 18-19 MLAs who went with NCP chief Ajit Pawar are now trying to return to the Sharad Pawar camp.
According to the Indian Express report, the MVA has also said that the upcoming budget session will be a defining moment for the Mahayuti as Ajit, who is in-charge of the finance portfolio, is preparing to present the budget in the assembly on June 28.
He said, “Those who want to return will do so only after the budget session. It is impossible for the grand alliance to survive after the budget session.”
The Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra comprising BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP has been facing internal tensions for some time now. Both BJP and Shiv Sena are sidelining Ajit Pawar’s NCP as the party has won only one seat out of four. RSS has also criticised Ajit and held him responsible for BJP’s poor performance.
Last week too, the BJP and the Shiv Sena did not accompany Ajith to file the Rajya Sabha nomination of his wife Sunetra, while a day later Ajith, who also holds the finance portfolio, did not attend the Business Advisory Council (BAC) meeting ahead of the Budget session of the Assembly.
However, refusing to comment on the RSS’ criticism, state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the party’s vote share has increased even though the number of seats has reduced (from 23 in 2019 to 9).
