Months after the controversy over a hoarding falling in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, a similar incident took place on Friday amid rain. A hoarding fell in Thane on Friday morning, crushing three vehicles, an official said. No casualties have been reported so far.
The incident was caught on camera as heavy rains lashed several parts of the city on Friday. A video shared by news agency ANI showed a wooden hoarding falling at Sahajanand Chowk in Kalyan, Thane at 10:18 am on Friday.

Kalyan Tehsildar Sachin Shejal said that the hoarding fell on three vehicles parked below. The exact size of the hoarding is not yet known.
According to news agency PTI, he said that a team has been sent to the spot and rescue operations are underway. He ruled out the possibility of anyone being trapped.
Controversy over Mumbai Ghatkopar hoarding collapse
The incident comes just months after an illegal hoarding collapsed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area. On May 13, at least 17 people were killed and 74 injured when a huge iron hoarding collapsed on a petrol pump in Ghatkopar amid a dust storm.
On July 29, the Maharashtra government constituted a six-member committee to conduct a high-level inquiry into the Ghatkopar incident. The order issued by the state home department detailed that the committee’s mandate includes investigating the role of entities responsible for the hoardings and petrol pumps.
This will include examining their past records, financial transactions and any possible collusion with officials of various agencies. The committee has also been tasked to evaluate the current process of approving and erecting hoardings on government and railway properties and recommend improvements to prevent such incidents in future.
The panel will also recommend a review of the hoarding policy of all railway or police lands to avoid such incidents in future.
The key areas of focus for the Committee include reviewing the adequacy of approval processes for hoardings and petrol pumps on government and railway land, assessing security protocols and legality of such establishments, analysing the land allocation process for petrol pumps and hoardings, and suggesting policy changes to enhance security and prevent illegal operations.
