New Delhi: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone of seven All India Institutes of Medical Sciences or AIIMS on Friday, starting from Rewari in Haryana, according to health ministry officials.
In the coming week, he will lay the foundation stone for six more AIIMS – Jammu, Rajkot (Gujarat), Bathinda (Punjab), Kalyani (West Bengal), Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh) and Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh).
Modi will dedicate Jammu AIIMS to the public on February 20 while the remaining five will be dedicated on February 25.
“The Prime Minister will be present at Rajkot AIIMS from where he will virtually inaugurate the other five AIIMS,” a senior official said. According to ministry officials, the cost of these seven AIIMS is approx. 10,000 crores.
The proposal for AIIMS in Rewari was announced in the Union Budget in 2019. The new AIIMS will provide undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as well as nursing and paramedical training.
Spread over 210 acres, the institute will have 750 beds (including 30 for AYUSH treatment), 75 ICU beds, 16 major OTs plus 2 minor OTs and 30 trauma beds. The medical college will have 100 seats and 25 super-specialty departments.
Health Ministry has been allocated in the interim budget for FY 2025 Rs 6,800 crore for the establishment expenditure of the new AIIMS.
So far, the Center has approved the establishment of 22 new AIIMS and 75 upgradation projects for existing Government Medical Colleges and Institutes (GMCIs) under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme.
Under this, six AIIMS were approved under Phase-I, including Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh which are already fully functional.
16 more AIIMS were approved by the Cabinet in subsequent phases.
