Prime Minister Narendra Modi-Netroet Central Government has offered land to Manmohan Singh’s family in Rajghat campus to build a memorial for the former Prime Minister.
This plot is next to the memorial of former Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee, who was the President when Singh was the Prime Minister in the UPA government. Singh died in December.
A report in NDTV has been quoted as saying that the central government is waiting for the family that it is building a trust and land. Government will provide The report states that 25 lakhs for the trust to build the memorial.
After the death of the former Finance Minister on 26 December 2024, the Congress party slammed the government to not be able to find a suitable place for Singh’s memorial. In response, the BJP reminded the Congress that it never built a memorial for PV Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister and experienced Congress leader.
Manmohan Singh, often referred to as the architect of India’s economic reforms, died at the age of 92 after complications related to age. When he lost his senses at his residence, he was taken to AIMS, Delhi.
Earlier in January, officials of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) visited the sites around the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial at the President’s Smriti Stall and listed some places where the memorial could be constructed.
The central government is waiting to create a trust for the family and the land will be allocated once it is formed.
Earlier, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he urged him to keep Singh’s funeral in a place where his memorial could be built.
The memorial land can only be allocated to a trust, making its formation a condition for the project. Once the trust is established, it will apply for land allocation, followed by an MoU with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for construction.
Singh was the Finance Minister in 1991 when India looked at the groundbreaking reforms that opened the country’s economy to the world. He also served as Prime Minister for two conditions between 2004 and 2014.
