Mysterious symbols often found in ancient rock carvings bear an “uncanny” resemblance to modern-day handbags. Undeniable similarities with modern-day objects, such as handbags, could hide big secrets about the relationship of human civilisations, according to theories.
The depiction of the ‘handbag’ is commonly found in the ruins of Turkish temples, those built by the Sumerians of Iraq, and in Maori decorations of New Zealand. The Olmecs of Central America are also known to have used this depiction in their craft forms.
Gobekli Tepe: One of the Earliest Discoveries
The first example of a handbag was found at the end of the Ice Age. One of the earliest carvings of a handbag is found at the ruins of Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey. Göbekli Tepe is believed to have been one of the oldest temple complexes with religious sacrifices. Archaeologists have found many animal bones at that site.
What can ‘handbag’ mean?
Objects depicted in ancient art usually have a rounded handle-like top and a rectangular bottom, as well as some additional details.
These images are either solitary, or often depict a person or mythological figure holding a basket in his hands – much like someone would hold a basket.
Theories say that a logical explanation behind this ‘uncanny’ similarity could be the civilization’s connection to the universe. The semicircular part, which resembles the strap of a bag, could be a hemisphere, while the square part, which resembles a bag, represents the Earth.
Over the years, ancient Indian and African cultures have seen the circle as a symbol of spirituality and nothing physical. On the other hand, the square symbolizes the earth and the non-physical. Many argue that this image represents the unification of the sky with the earth.

Carvings of handbags also appear in Assyrian carvings from ancient Iraq dating from 883-859 BC. Theories say that according to Assyrian art, purses held different things depending on whether it was Assyrian or Olmec.
According to Assyrian art, the purse could be said to have contained magical dust. But if seen according to Olmec art, it means that the purse contained narcotics. Therefore, it can be speculated that the purse could have been used as a standard of measurement, the theories mention.
