Sech made his acting debut in the 2018 dystopian science-fiction film, The Darkest Minds
Following a successful first season, Netflix renewed its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender for seasons 2 and 3 in March. While most of the characters in season 1 were unveiled, one major character was missing – Toph Beifong. With production on the second season currently underway, the streaming giant announced as part of its annual Geeked Week fan event that Mia Cech has been cast in the fan favorite role.

Explaining their decision behind casting Cech as Toph, executive producers Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan told Tudum, “We make a point of reviewing different submissions and after countless tapings, we both had the same reaction… Mia is our Toph!”
He added, “Mia is a terrific performer who knows how to strike the balance between sarcastic humor, stubbornness, and vulnerability that characterizes Toph Beifong. Her physicality and emotional dexterity really put her in a class of her own.”
Who is Miya Check?
Sech is a 17-year-old American actress best known for her roles in Beef, Young Rock, The Santa Clause, and You’re So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah. She made her acting debut in the 2018 dystopian science fiction film The Darkest Minds, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson.
Cech was overjoyed at the news of her casting as Toph. Speaking to Tudum, she insisted that the fictional earthbending master is a “completely unique character” and that “there’s no one else like her.”
“I personally am of Chinese and Japanese American descent and I’m so excited to represent my Chinese heritage in Toph Beifong,” said Sheck. “One of the most incredible aspects of this show is the diversity of Asian cultures in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” she added.
“Even though the universe is fictional, it seems like every culture is represented in some way and connected to the history and traditions of that culture or country,” Sech added. “A few years ago, you might have seen one or two of these actors in a show or movie, but on this show we’re all able to come together to represent this world and work together and collaborate. It’s really amazing and a gift as an actor.”
