The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern and Southern Lights, was visible over Ladakh, India on May 11, according to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, which captured the spectacular images for the first time.

According to IAO, Aurora Borealis is rare in India. Nevertheless, astronomers at the Hanley Dark Sky Reserve observed a red glow on the northwestern horizon in the sky beginning about 1 a.m. Saturday, which continued until dawn.

“We were lucky enough to see aurora activity on our all-sky camera during routine binocular observations,” said Stanzin Norla, an engineer at the Henley Dark Sky Reserve. PTI.

Norla also shared photos of the spectacular view on the X and said that the sky turned red along the horizon and later turned pink.

However, according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the extreme geomagnetic storm is ongoing and will continue through at least Sunday. So if you have missed seeing the lights of the sky dancing in a spectacular style, then you can get the chance till this weekend.

Taking the And if weather permits, they may be visible again tonight.

Alaska-based Northern Lights photographer Vincent Ledvina also shared an image that shows the aurora over India.

Earlier on Saturday, Vagish Mishra, assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, had mentioned that four super-strong CMEs from the Sun reached Earth on May 10-11, causing the solar storm to become one of the strongest geomagnetic storms .

He said such intense storms had occurred almost two decades ago in November 2003.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center said on April 21 that a severe (G4) geomagnetic storm event, classified as G4 on the NOAA scale, occurred in Ladakh despite being located at mid-latitudes.

This aurora was previously visible over Ladakh during the night of April 22–23, 2023, which experts attribute to the coronal mass ejection on April 21. This ejection caused a G-4 category geomagnetic storm on Earth.
