About the trailer
The Megalopolis trailer begins with an extended montage of Coppola’s previous films, which were panned by critics, giving way to a voiceover revealing the director’s entirely new approach to this film. “A filmmaker always ahead of his time,” it says.
Adam Driver stars as an architect who can stop time at will, and wants to build an ideal city devoid of corruption. Mayor Franklin Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) opposes him, while his daughter (Nathalie Emmanuel) falls in love with him. The trailer also includes glimpses of the star cast that includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman.
Reactions from fans
Reacting to the trailer, one fan commented: “Probably the funniest opening to a trailer I’ve seen in a while.” Another fan added, “The fact that Francis Ford Coppola did all the marketing himself with his own money and this is the best trailer he could have made despite those bad reviews he got for his previous movies is absolutely insane. Respect to the King, no one does it like him!” Another added, “The trailer showed a lot but I still have no idea what’s going on. I love it!”
Francis Ford Coppola has been trying to make Megalopolis for decades. He spent $120 million from his wine empire to produce the film. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it received divisive reviews and a seven-minute standing ovation.
Megalopolis will release in cinemas on September 27.
