Despite the 39% increase in MBBS seats since 2020, 2,849 graduate medical seats remained vacant in 2024, the government data presented in the Lok Sabha has been revealed.

According to data shared by the National Medical Commission (NMC), even India has seen a 39 percent increase in MBBS seats in the last four years, even in the last four years, sufficient number of graduate medical seats remain vacant. This information was given in Lok Sabha on August 1 by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel, in response to an unpublished question raised by Telugu Desam Party MP Putta Mahesh Kumar.

Data suggests that MBBS seats increased from 83,275 to 1,15,900 in 2024-25 in academic year 2020-21. Despite this expansion, 4,146 undergraduate seats (except AIIMS and Zipper) were unfolded in 2022-23 – most in recent years. While the number of vacant seats in 2024-25 increased to 2,849, the interval remains a matter of concern.
The government blamed the rapid increase in seats for the establishment of new medical colleges and increase in the availability of infrastructure and faculty. To maintain educational and training standards, NMC has implemented minimum standard requirement rules, 2023. These rules are infrastructure, clinical materials, faculty power and benchmarks required for other requirements for installation and operation of medical colleges.
Government figures also indicated that states like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat led both MBBS seats in both 2020–21 and 2024–25, which contributed significantly to the national tally.

In the Lok Sabha, the government designed several initiatives for the purpose of expanding medical education and increasing the number of MBBS and postgraduate seats across the country.
According to official data, under the centrally sponsored scheme for establishment of new medical colleges, district and referral hospitals – especially in -stand and asphalt districts – is being upgraded. Out of 157 medical colleges approved under this scheme, 131 are already operational.
Additionally, a separate centrally sponsored scheme continues to strengthen the infrastructure of the current state and central government medical colleges. This initiative focuses on expanding intake capacity for both MBB and PG courses.

In addition, under the Pradhan Mantri Health Support Scheme (PMSSY), the government is upgrading medical colleges by constructing super specialty blocks. Under this initiative, 71 of the 75 projects approved have been completed.
In parallel, efforts to expand the AIIMS network continue under a central region scheme. A total of 22 new AIIMS has been approved so far, out of which 19 are already undergraduate courses.
