Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt recalls shooting the iconic song Chithi Aayi Hai from his 1986 film Naam with late ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas and shared that initially, the artiste was hesitant to be a part of the film. He told ANI, “I did not know for so long that he was ill and suddenly when this news reached me, his smiling face flashed before my eyes, which would mesmerize anyone. Then I saw the film. The song named ‘Chithi Aayi Hai’ came to mind.” , which was filmed on Sanjay Dutt and Amrita (Singh) ji. Initially, he was hesitant to act in the film as he said, ‘I have never acted in films and I am only a singer who sings in parties.’ I said you have to do the same and I still remember how nervous he was as a newcomer.”
Mahesh Bhatt, who directed the film, further said, “He was afraid that he would not be able to live up to our expectations, but the way he sang it was beyond our expectations.”
Giving credit to the lyrics written by Anand Bakshi, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and the voice of Pankaj Udhas, he said that this song has been liked very much by music lovers. “I salute Bakshi saab because this song came from his heart, Salim Khan’s talent and Bakshi’s writing, Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music and then Sanjay Dutt’s thirst to prove himself and make a name for himself in the industry. This song connects with that feeling of longing and pain when you are away from your home and country. This song is immortal. I am lucky that I met Pankaj ji and this song gave him so much status and name in the industry. People still love this composition and after his demise, many people called me remembering the same track.
Pankaj Udhas was born on 17 May 1951 in Jetpur, Gujarat. Apart from ghazals, he was also known for his work in films. In 1980, his solo ghazal album Aahat brought him a lot of recognition. Later, he recorded many hits, such as Mukhraar in 1981, Tarannum in 1982, Mehfil in 1983 and many others.
Among the evergreen ghazals that Pankaj Udhas lent his vocals to were Chitthi Aayi Hai, Chandani Raat Mein, Na Kajre Ki Dhaar, Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein, Ek Taraf Uska Ghar, and Thodi Thodi Piya Karo. The singer’s demise left the music industry in shock and grief.
