A BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore has urged garba organizers to make participants drink “gamutra” (cow urine) before entering the pandal, PTI reported. BJP leader Chintu Verma’s statement sparked controversy and opposition parties reacted sharply, terming it a “new strategy of polarisation”.
Garba is an energetic folk dance of Gujarat that is popular even outside the state, and its pandals are set up during Navratri in many cities of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states.
Reflecting the importance of this practice in Sanatan culture, BJP district president Chintu Verma told reporters that he requested the Garba organizers to ensure that the Garba participants “cleanse themselves of cow urine” before entering the pandals for the dance session. Aachman.”
Achamman is a practice followed by Hindus before the beginning of a sacred ritual. During this process, they drink a sip of water while reciting a mantra for purification.
“We have requested the organizers to ensure that devotees are awash with cow urine before entering the Garba pandals,” PTI quoted Verma as saying.
‘There is no question of denying Aachman’: Verma
Explaining the rationale behind his demand for entry of garba participants, Verma said that documents like Aadhaar can be edited, but “there is no question of a Hindu being denied entry”.
“Aadhaar card can be edited. However, if a person is a Hindu, he will enter the Garba pandal only after performing achamana with cow urine and there is no question of denying it,” Verma told PTI. “
BJP’s new tactic of polarization politics: Congress
Criticizing the BJP leader for his demand, Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla attacked the BJP for remaining silent on true issues related to cow welfare and instead focusing on politicizing the issue. Shukla accused the BJP of remaining silent on the plight of cow shelters and said the party was only interested in polarizing the public.
He also demanded BJP leaders to share their videos on social media of drinking cow urine before entering pandals while advising others to do the same. He said, “Raising the demand for cow urine disposal is the BJP’s new ploy to do politics of polarization.”
