Continuing the passenger vehicle momentum in India, domestic car sales in March 2024 marked a strong end to FY 2024 for major automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra. This can be seen in the monthly data released. A huge growth of 42.51 percent was seen in total industry figures. Especially the sales of SUVs increased with the sale of 21,46,409 units, which is a growth of 27.2 percent.
After this, sedan cars stood second in terms of sales. 3,80,135 units of sedan cars were sold. However, a decline of 5.9 percent was observed. Similarly, sales of compact cars also saw a decline, 1,173,285 units were sold, which is a decline of 12.4 percent.

Top Selling Manufacturers of March 2024
Maruti Suzuki recorded significant growth in domestic passenger vehicle sales with a growth of 15 percent in March 2024. The company sold 1,52,718 units, whereas in the same period last year this figure was 1,32,763 units. Tata Motors has also seen growth in passenger vehicle sales including electric vehicles in the domestic market. Sales in March stood at 50,297 units, which is 14 percent more than 44,225 units in the same period last year.
Mahindra recorded growth in monthly sales, with 40,631 passenger vehicles sold in domestic sales, which shows a growth of 13 percent compared to March 2023. Honda Cars India recorded monthly domestic sales of 7,071 units in March 2024, along with export numbers of 6,860 units. In comparison, the company sold 6,692 units domestically and exported 3,189 units in March 2023.
MG Motor India, on the other hand, experienced a year-on-year decline in sales in March 2024, with 4,648 units sold compared to 6,051 units in March 2023, showing a decline of over 23 percent. Toyota sold 25,119 vehicles in India and exported 2,061 units. Compared to the same period last year, this marked a year-on-year growth of 25 percent with sales of 21,783 units.
