This decision was taken due to security reasons, but there has been a deep history and emotional connection with this bridge. The construction of Laxman Jhule started in 1927 and was opened to the public on 11 April 1930. This bridge is a suspension bridge made of steel wires, which is about 124 meters in length. It is built on the Ganges river in Rishikesh and connects Tehri and Pauri districts. Not only did the local people have to visit everyday from this bridge, but it was also a center of attraction for tourists coming from India and abroad.

In a conversation with Local 18, Shubham Tiwari, priest of Shri Sacha Akhileshwar Mahadev Temple, says that according to religious belief, Lord Rama’s younger brother Laxman crossed the Ganges at this place in Treta Yuga. It is believed that he crossed the river with the help of a tree branch. Keeping this story in mind, the bridge was constructed at this place and it was named Laxman Jhula. Later, this place became the center of Hindu faith. Thousands of devotees have been visiting here.
IIT Roorkee warning
The condition of the bridge started deteriorating over time. Due to increasing traffic and frequent use, its wires and infrastructure began to cause weakness. In the year 2019, a report by IIT Roorkee told that Laxman Jhula is no longer safe for traffic. According to the report, many parts of the bridge started rusting and loose, which increased the risk of falling. For this reason, on 12 July 2019, the Uttarakhand government decided to close it for the general public.
Ban on walking
However, in view of the feelings of the local people and tourists, it was allowed to walk for some time. But on 3 April 2022, a supporting wire of the bridge broke, causing the situation to become more serious. After this, the administration was forced to stop it completely. Laxman Jhula was not just a bridge, it was part of the soul of Rishikesh. This bridge was a rare confluence of spirituality, culture, and engineering. Its religious belief, historical importance and contribution to tourism make it special. The state government is working on a plan to build a new and strong bridge in its place, so that along with the safety of the people, this historical heritage can be respected.
