Labor MP Vicky Foxcroft has resigned as a government whip in protest against the proposed benefits of Sir Kir Stmper, including cuts for support for people with disabilities. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Foxcroft clarified that it could not support changes that will reduce financial assistance for needy people.
He said, “So I tender my resignation because I know I will not be able to do the work I need and whip – or really for vote reforms that include the finance of people with disabilities,” she wrote.
First government resigns on star’s plan
Foxcroft, who previously served as the Minister of Chhaya Minister for people with disabilities, became the first MP to leave the government against the controversial welfare package.
Their departure increases the pressure on labor leadership amid increasing anxiety from within the party to deal with profit improvement.
Support for improvement, not for cut
In his resignation letter, Levisham North MP admitted that the welfare system needs to be changed but criticized the approach being taken.
“Benefit system is in dire need of improvement,” he wrote. “I fully understand the need to address the ever -increasing welfare bill in these difficult economic time, but I always believe that this can be done by supporting more disabled people.”
He said: “I don’t believe that the health element of personal freedom payment (PIP) and the health element of universal credit should be part of the solution.”
A difficult decision
Foxcroft described his decision to resign as he had “wrestled” for some time.
He said, “Now it seems that we are not going to achieve the changes I wanted to see strictly,” he said, continuing in his role means supporting reforms that he fundamentally disagree.
His resignation may indicate more dissatisfaction within the labor rank as the party wants to implement controversial welfare reforms.
