Ram Vilasom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVHSS), a district in South Kerala, has become a model for educational innovation with a unique class setup that ends the concept of backbenchers. PTI reported that every primary student to receive equal attention, RVHSS has talked about praise and copying.
Inspired by the recently released Malayalam film Stanthi Srikuttan, the school has implemented an innovative seating system, where single -line seats are aligned with four walls of the class, ensuring that everyone is sitting in front benches.
This seating system has already been adopted by eight schools in Kerala, and even a school in Punjab has embraced it.
“I received a message that a school in Punjab also adopted it, when the principal saw the film on the OTT platform. He also watched the film for the students. I am happy that it was given national attention,” Stanharrthi Srikuttan ‘director Vinesh Vishwanathan told the news agency.
He said that showing this system in the film was just one scene in the film, an idea implemented by the seventh standard student in the film as an idea. “It was his experience of insulting sitting on the backbench, which gave him such an idea. I never thought that it would attract such attention. It is not an idea created by us, but we had such a seating arrangement earlier in classrooms, as part of the District Primary Education Program (DPEP) and we had lost it somewhere,” said that “said.
Minister KB Ganesh Kumar, whose family has operated RMVHSS, played an important role in presenting this new system in school. After seeing the preview of ‘Sthanarthi Sreekuttan’ a year before its release, he discussed with teachers to implement it in RMVHSS primary classes.
First, the school decided to start it in class 1 and after receiving a good response, it expanded it in all lower primary classes, RMVHSS headmaster Sunil P Sekhar told PTI. He said that this system allowed teachers to pay equal attention to all students, which provides better student monitoring. Additionally, it eliminated the concept of backbenchers, putting every student in prominence.
He said, “There are lower primary class where students learn a lot of new things and they naturally get rid of the concept or taboo of sitting on the backbenth. It also helps students to have more direct conversations with teachers,” he said.
According to teachers, such systems are already practiced with better student-teacher ratio in schools in countries like Finland and Norway.
