In a potential landmark discovery, scientists achieved what they called the strongest signs of possible life beyond our solar system. He used the James Web Space Telescope to study the atmosphere of a planet called K2–18B and detected signs of molecules that are manufactured by only simple organisms on Earth.
Two gases were found – Dimethyl sulfide, or DMS, and dimethyl dysalfide, or DMD – is produced on the earth by living organisms, mainly by microbial life -algae, royates, such as marine phytoplinkon.
“This suggests that the planet may be taming with microbial life,” the researchers were quoted saying.
This is a new but temporary evidence. Researchers emphasized that they are not announcing the discovery of real living organisms (foreign lives), but an indicator of a potential bioscnecular – a biological process.
He said that the findings should be watched carefully. The team and independent astronomers stressed that more data is required to confirm these results.
‘The strongest evidence is still’
Professor Nikku Madhusudhan, the lead researcher, told the BBC at his laboratory at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University that he expects to get a clining evidence soon.
“This is the strongest evidence, yet there is possibly life. I can say really that we can confirm this signal within one to two years,” Madhusudhan said.
Prof. Madhusudhan said, “If we confirm that there is life on the K2-18B, it should basically confirm that life in the galaxy is very common”. There are lots of “IFS” and “buts” at this stage, pro.
K2-18 b planet
James Web Space Telescope visited the planet named K2–18B, which is located about 124 light-year from Earth. This is 8.6 times the mass of the Earth.
The planet was discovered in 2015.
According to NASA, “K2–18 B is a super meaning exoplanet or revolve around an M-Type star. Its mass is 8.92 Earth, it takes 32.9 days to complete a orbit of its star, and its star is 0.1429 AU. It was discovered in 2015.”
This is second, more promising, time when NASA’s James Web Space Telescope has detected chemicals associated with life in the planet’s atmosphere.
In 2023, an investigation into NASA’s James Web Space Telescope revealed the presence of carbon-bearing molecules including methane and carbon dioxide.
The discovery of the web added to recent studies, stating that K2–18 B can be a Hycean Exoplanet, a one that has the ability to have a hydrogen-rich environment and the ability to be entitled to the surface covered with a water-covered ocean.
“The only landscape that currently explains all the data received from JWST [James Webb Space Telescope]Madhusadhan said, “including the past and current comments, the K2–18B is a hycian world that is with life.
“However, we need to be open and continue searching for other scenarios,” he said.
Chemical as a marker of life
Both DMS and DMD have been predicted from the same chemical family, significant exoplanet biosphere.
The web found that 99.7% in the planet’s atmosphere was present at the level of confidence in the planet’s atmosphere, meaning that there is still a 0.3% chance of observation which is a statistical flower.
The gases were detected by the volume in atmospheric concentrations of more than 10 parts per million.
But scientists feel that they have found evidence of DMS on a comet, which means that life may not be required for life, which doubts the use of chemicals as a marker of life, Space.com said.
Madhusudhan said, “… We need more theoretical and experimental studies to ensure whether there is another abiotic system or not [one not involving biological processes] To make DMS or DMDS in the atmosphere of planets like K2-18 B. ,
“Even though previous studies have suggested them [as] Even strong biosignatures for K2–18 B, we need to be open and pursue other possibilities, “he said.
