It Ends With Us star Justin Baldoni has filed a $250 million lawsuit over a New York Times article that surfaced Blake Lively’s sexual assault claims.
Actor-filmmaker Justin Baldoni has sued The New York Times, demanding $250 million in damages. The lawsuit is in response to an in-depth article the newspaper published in support of Baldoni’s sexual assault allegations against It End’s With Us co-star Blake Lively. Baldoni described the article as relying entirely on his ‘self-serving narrative’. ,Also read: Blake Lively Sues Justin Baldoni for Severe Emotional Distress, Mental Pain, Suffering and Lost Wages,
Justin Baldoni’s suit
Variety reported Tuesday that Baldoni has filed a $250 million lawsuit against the NYT in Los Angeles Superior Court. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit include publicists Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel as well as It End’s With Us producers Jamie Heath and Steve Sarowitz, who are suing the newspaper for defamation and false invasion of privacy. The crux of the controversy is a December 21 article titled ‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine.
The lawsuit claims the publication “relied on ‘cherry-picked’ and altered communications by removing essential context and intentionally adding information to mislead.” The article presented Blake Lively’s version of events in her ongoing legal battle against Baldoni, in which she accused her co-star of sexual harassment and an alleged smear campaign against her. However, in his 87-page complaint, Baldoni claims there was a smear campaign against him by Blake, calling the article a manipulation.
The New York Times responds
The New York Times has defended its article and vowed to fight the lawsuit. A spokesperson for The New York Times told Variety, “The role of an independent news organization is to follow the facts where they lead. Our story was reported carefully and responsibly. It was based on a review of thousands of pages of original documents, including text messages and emails that we have quoted accurately and in detail in the article. To date, Wayfarer Studios, Mr. Baldoni, the other subjects of the article, and their representatives have not pointed out a single error. We also published his full statement in response to the allegations in the article. We plan to vigorously defend against the lawsuit.
The article and its aftermath resulted in Baldoni being dropped as a client by WME. Blake previously filed her own lawsuit accusing Baldoni of harassment. A new lawsuit also adds ‘mental anguish’ to the charges. The two starred in the drama It Ends With Us, released last year. But it was a difficult collaboration with neither of them being seen with each other during promotions.
