According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), this tremor was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers. It is a matter of relief that till now there is no news of any injury or casualty. Earthquakes are not a new thing in Japan. This country falls in the ‘Ring of Fire’ region of the Pacific Ocean, where four major tectonic plates – Pacific, Philippine Sea, Eurasian and North American plates meet. Due to the continuous movement of these plates, earthquakes keep occurring here again and again.
Japan has the world’s densest seismic monitoring network, through which even the smallest tremors can be recorded. This is the reason why the country is counted among the most prepared countries in the world to deal with natural disasters.
Why do earthquakes occur?
There are many large tectonic plates beneath the earth’s surface, which keep moving continuously. When these plates collide with each other or slide among themselves, energy is released and this shock is felt as an earthquake. Countries like Japan, Indonesia, Nepal and India fall in this geological disturbance zone, hence earthquakes keep happening here again and again.
What to do during earthquake?
The most important thing is not to panic when an earthquake occurs. If you are inside the house, cover your head and neck by bending under a strong table or table. Stay away from windows, mirrors, fans and heavy furniture. If you are outside, go to an open field or road and maintain distance from electric poles, trees or buildings. Do not use the lift, and go out only after the shaking stops.
