New Delhi. Last year i.e. in 2023, about 64 percent of Indian companies were affected by ransomware attacks. This has come to light in a survey. A report released on Tuesday by global cyber security solutions provider Sophos said that these attacks have declined on an annual basis, but their actual impact on victims has increased.
The attackers demanded an average of US$4.8 million as ransom from these companies, while 62 percent of the demands were more than $1 million. The cyber security solutions provider’s report said that the average ransom paid was US$2 million.

What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is also a type of malware, which attacks users or any organization and blocks access to files on their computers. It takes over files on computers, network shares, backups and servers and then the attacker demands money from users to unlock the files.

Decline in ransomware attacks
According to Sophos’ ‘State of Ransomware in India 2024’ report, the rate of ransomware attacks against Indian companies declined from 73 percent in the previous study (2022) to 64 percent in 2023. However, during this period the ransom demand and amount given increased. 500 respondents from India were included in the survey.
