Eye diseases and allergies are very common during the monsoon season. For children, it can be very easy to fall prey to such ailments. Watery eyes can be a symptom of a more serious eye condition. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Nidhi Jyoti Shetty, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Bhandup, said, “When your child’s eyes water, it can be alarming and often prompts parents to look for effective solutions immediately. Understanding the possible causes behind this symptom is essential to provide proper care and ensure your child’s comfort and eye health.”

Conjunctivitis (pink eye):
This common condition can be caused by a virus or bacteria. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and sticky discharge that may form crusts around the eyes. Treatment usually involves antibiotic eye drops or ointment prescribed by a pediatrician to clear up the infection.

Common cold:
Viral infections such as the common cold can cause watery eyes in children. Treating the symptoms of the cold can help reduce watery eyes once the cold is cured.
Narrow or blocked tear duct:
Babies often have underdeveloped tear ducts that do not fully open until several months after birth. If the tear duct is partially blocked, gentle massage between the eye and nose can help open it.

Nasal problems:
Conditions such as nasal polyps, cysts or tumors can block the nasal passages, leading to excessive tears and watery eyes. An ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist can be consulted to address these problems.
Exposure to allergens:
Allergies can cause watery eyes in babies, especially when they come into contact with common allergens such as pollen, pet dander or dust mites.
environmental factors:
Irritants such as smoke or dust can temporarily cause watery eyes. Ensuring a clean and smoke-free environment for the child can help reduce these symptoms.
Dr. Nidhi Jyothi Shetty said, “If your child’s watery eyes persist or are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, irritability, or abnormal eye discharge, it is important to consult a pediatrician immediately for a proper diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.”
