How easy or difficult have the seat-sharing talks been for the opposition parties so far? India Block, an alliance of 26 opposition parties, has already started brainstorming on how many seats they would like to contest the Lok Sabha elections. However, Congress seems to be in a difficult position as most of the regional parties have refused to make any compromise in the seat-sharing aspect.
The Congress had reportedly informed its state units that it was considering fielding candidates on 255 seats out of the total 543 for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Here’s a look at how seat sharing talks are going on in different seats and what different political parties are demanding:
Delhi
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in power in Delhi. There are seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital. According to India Today, AAP offered three Lok Sabha seats to Congress in Delhi. Meanwhile, Times of India reported that Congress has expressed its desire to contest the East Delhi, North East and Chandni Chowk seats.
Delhi and Punjab are two areas where AAP and Congress are at loggerheads. As soon as these news came to light, Congress leader Sandeep Dixit Said, “We don’t have details whether they will offer us three or four seats. There was no clarity whether there would be an alliance in Delhi or not.
Punjab
At present there is Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab. There are 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab. As seat-sharing talks are underway with the Congress, sources told India Today that the AAP has expressed willingness to give six seats to the Congress in the border state.
However, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring Said On January 4, “AICC (All India Congress Committee) has asked us to compete on all 13 seats… We have made preparations to compete on all 13 seats. We will discuss the candidates and the strategy to contest the elections in the coming 3-4 months.”
Bihar
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) is adamant on its demand for 16-17 seats out of 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar. According to PTI, a close aide of Kumar had earlier clarified that for the JD(U), there is no question of the JD(U) going below its current strength of 16 in the Lok Sabha.
Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has also demanded 17 seats, leaving seats for the Congress, Indian Express reported quoting sources.

Amid speculations that the Congress has been asked not to compromise on more than four Lok Sabha seats, state Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh said, “If the Congress contests only four seats, the entire grand alliance, including the JD(U), will be at a loss.” will be.” “However, it is not our case that we should be given nine seats just because we had contested on so many seats in 2019.”
As of now, JDU has 16 seats in Bihar; BJP holds 17 and RJD does not have a single Lok Sabha seat in the state.
Maharashtra
There are 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT faction) leader Sanjay Raut has already said that his party will contest elections on 23 Lok Sabha seats. Meanwhile, NCP may demand 10-11 seats.
Moreover, Congress leaders reportedly decided that they should get 22-23 seats in the seat sharing formula. However, Sanjay Raut had earlier said that Congress would start talks from zero while discussing the seat sharing formula in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Times of India has reported that Congress may have to contest elections on 17-18 seats in the state, leaving some seats aside.
Sanjay Raut had recently said, “There is no fight (over seats) in Maharashtra… There may be some differences on 2-3 seats but we will discuss it…” Meanwhile, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole said, “Seat distribution in MVA will be smooth… Seat distribution will be done on merit basis and MVA will have to defeat BJP on all seats, for which complete plan is ready…”

According to India Today report, AAP has sought one Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat.
Haryana
There are 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana. AAP has reportedly sought to contest elections on three Lok Sabha seats in the BJP-ruled state.
Goa
Goa sends two leaders to Lok Sabha. AAP reportedly sought one Lok Sabha seat in Goa, while leaving the other for Congress.
West Bengal
Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) is currently in power in West Bengal, with 42 Lok Sabha seats. TMC has reportedly offered its two seats in the state to India block ally Congress for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
According to an NDTV report, the Congress tried to gain 10 seats (including the two it won in the 2019 elections). In the 2019 elections, Trinamool won 22 seats, Congress won two (Behrampur and Malda South), and BJP won 18 seats.

Even RJD is demanding more seats in the state.

Talks on seat sharing are still pending in many other states including Uttar Pradesh. Lok Sabha elections are to be held across the country this year. The Election Commission has not yet announced the election schedule.
