When we look at popular gym culture and the diets followed by fitness enthusiasts, we find a lot of tasteless boiled chicken, rice, and broccoli. Even in terms of healthier foods, kale and spinach are the most popular. We are led to believe that fun-tasting food is unhealthy, while tasteless food is the better choice. This is where the popular belief of spicy food being unhealthy comes in. Dietitian Shayla Cadogan, RD, explained in an article that even though this may be the popular belief, there is much more to spicy food than its reputation.

Reactions caused by eating too much spice
The internet is full of videos of people taking the hot pepper challenge, where they eat so much spicy food that their eyes water and faces turn red. Dietitians said these reactions are signs of trouble that can get more serious if ignored. However, when we eat spicy food or add spices to our diet, we are not eating the hottest peppers every day. A harmless hot sauce or a few jalapenos can’t go wrong. All we need to do is understand our tolerance to spice and eat accordingly.

What effect does it have on the body when we eat spicy food?
Dietitian Shayla Cadogan, R.D., explained that spicy foods trigger the body to produce a natural response. In chili peppers, capsaicin is a compound that can cause a burning or burning sensation on the tongue — that’s because some peppers evolved as a way to deter mammals from eating them. However, having a mild spice can make the dish enjoyable and full of flavor. Eating hot peppers can activate heat receptors in the body, tricking the body into believing it’s overheating.
The dietitian further explained that spicy food is not unhealthy – we just need to understand what level of spice we like. If we are thinking of adding more spices to the diet, we should do it gradually. Also, we should pay attention to how the body reacts to the spice.
