Ireland has elected its first openly left-wing independent president in modern history, marking a seismic political shift. Former barrister and Galway MP Catherine Connolly, 68, has been declared the next President of the Republic after securing 63% of the first preference vote – a surprise result that has shaken the political establishment and redefined the country’s center of gravity.
“I will be a voice for peace, a voice that builds on our policy of neutrality, a voice that articulates the existential threat posed by climate change,” Connolly said in Dublin Castle on Saturday night, moments after being declared the winner. “Together, we can shape a new republic that values everyone, that values and champions diversity and that is confident in our own identities.”
How did Catherine Connolly achieve this historic victory?
Of the 1.44 million valid votes cast, Connolly secured 914,143 votes, far ahead of her nearest rival, Heather Humphreys of the ruling Fine Gael party, who secured 29%. The third candidate, Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin, withdrew mid-campaign following a financial scandal, but still received 7% of the vote.
However, the steep decline was caused by a record 213,738 spoiled or invalid ballots, reflecting widespread frustration with limited options and political disillusionment. Turnout was only 46%, unusually low by Irish standards.
Political analysts believe Connolly’s rise is due to voter anger over the housing and affordability crisis, fatigue with the centrist establishment, and deft use of social media to connect with young voters. His podcast appearance and viral video – which featured him doing keep-ups – solidified his image as a relatable, grassroots alternative.

Who is Catherine Connolly?
Born in Shantalla, a working-class suburb of Galway, Connolly was the ninth of 14 children. Her mother died when she was nine, an experience she later said shaped her empathy and sense of justice.
After gaining a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Leeds, she returned to Galway, became a barrister and clinical psychologist and entered politics through the Labor Party. Elected to Galway City Council in 1999, she later served as mayor in 2004, before leaving the Labor Party.
In 2016, he was elected as an independent TD (Member of Parliament) and gained recognition for his outspoken criticism of inequality and Western interference in global conflicts. In 2020, she became the first woman elected as Deputy Speaker of the Dáil, a milestone that expanded her national profile.
What kind of president would Connolly be?
Although critics have warned that Connolly might test the limits of her office, Connolly insisted that she would respect the constitutional limits of the presidency. “Our people and democracy need constructive inquiry,” he said in his victory speech.
During a televised debate, when asked whether she would confront Donald Trump on genocide charges, she replied:
“If it’s just a meet and greet, I’ll meet and greet. If the discussion is genocide, that’s a completely different thing.”
Supporters see in him a continuation of the activist tradition of Mary Robinson, Mary McAleese, and Michael D. Higgins, all of whom expanded the moral authority of the presidency beyond its formal duties.
What’s next for Ireland’s new President?
Connolly will be inaugurated at Áras an Uachtaráin next month, succeeding President Michael D Higgins, who congratulated him on Saturday, saying:
“The President-elect will have the full support of this office as she prepares for her inauguration next month.”
His seven-year term begins amid growing polarization, with half of the electorate feeling unrepresented by any of the main candidates. Yet, for his supporters, Connolly’s victory symbolizes a new, progressive Ireland – one that is skeptical of militarism and fiercely defends social justice.
As he put it on election night:
