New Delhi: A body under the Ministry of Health, Pharmacopia Commission (IPC) has named five lifestyle drugs as showing serious side effects.
Drugs are metronidazole, an antibiotic; Luliconazole, an antifungal; Dalteparin is used for cancer treatment; Diabetes drug glyclazide and tramdol, a pain reliever.
During the recent analysis of adverse drug responses (ADR), the Commission found that the use of these drugs could lead to serious reactions, including muscle cramps.
The government body has asked the authorities to report more adverse incidents related to the use of medicines.

The IPC drug safety alert reviewed, “Analysis of adverse drug reactions from India database’s pharmacovigilance program has shown that metronidazole, luliconazole, daltaparin, glyzide, tramdol cause reaction to adverse drug reaction.” Mint,
“Healthcare professionals, patients or consumers are advised to closely monitor the possibility of the above ADR associated with the use of the above suspected drug. If such a response is faced, please report to the IPC,” said this.
An ADR is an harmful, unexpected results caused by taking the drug. ADR can occur after a single dose of a drug or after prolonged administration or a combination of two or more drugs.
The IPC stated that metronidazole is usually an antibiotic, which is commonly used for the treatment of hemibiasis, an intestinal and extreme final disease, urinary trichomoniasis and giardiasis in women, an intestinal infection. However, using metronidazole can also lead to acute generalized achanthematus pustulosis (agep), a rare, severe dermatitis reaction.

Luliconazole, an antifungal drug that is used for the treatment of fungal skin infections, can cause a closma – a normal skin condition that causes dark patch.
Similarly, dalteparin, an anticoagulant and cancer patients used for the treatment of dalteparin, was found to be the cause of muscle spasms, to reduce the recurrence of venous thromboimbolism in patients with cancer.
Gliclazide, which is mainly used for diabetes or without obesity in adults, was found to be the cause of erythema multifor (EM), a skin condition. Similarly, tramdol, a pain relief medicine, fixed drug explosion, cause of a type of skin reaction are found.
The IPC monitors the adverse reactions of the drug among the Indian population and helps the standard control organization (CDSCO) of central drugs in regulatory decision making for safe use of drugs.

“For the public, this should not cause anxiety. These drugs are well established and widely used. While rare side effects can sometimes be identified, we should not forget that patients are safe and benefit from them.”
Questions sent to the Ministry of Health remained unanswered till the press time.
