Every year on 4 December, India celebrates Indian Navy Day to commemorate the naval victory at Karachi port during Operation Trident in 1971. Many youth aspire to join the Indian Navy and protect the country’s maritime borders. If this is your dream, then you can become a naval officer as soon as you complete 12th.
Ranked seventh among the 10 most powerful navies in the world, the Indian Navy offers excellent career opportunities. Here’s how you can make a career in the Navy after schooling:
NDA/NA Exam
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the National Defense Academy (NDA) examination twice a year. After passing the written examination, candidates have to go through the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview. The age limit for NDA exam is 16.5 to 19 years. To be eligible, candidates must have passed 12th class with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Another route to join the Navy is the 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry Scheme, which selects candidates with high ranks in the JEE Main exam. Successful candidates undergo a four-year training program at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala (Kerala).
On completion of the training programme, they are appointed as officers and awarded the degree of B.Tech. The scheme trains officers for the academic, executive and technical branches of the Navy.
Eligibility requires class 12 qualification in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with at least 70% marks along with JEE Main rank. Candidates are selected for SSB interview on the basis of their performance in JEE Main.
Opportunity to become a naval firefighter
You can also join the Navy under the Central Government’s new scheme Agniveer. The age limit for this entry is 17.5 to 21 years. Candidates must have obtained at least 50% marks in class 12th with Mathematics and Physics. Students who have appeared for class 12th examination are also eligible to apply.

INET is another officer entry scheme, offering both permanent and short service commission opportunities. INET is conducted twice a year, and applications can be submitted online at www.joinIndianavy.gov.in. The examination is conducted online, and candidates who qualify the written examination are invited for SSB interview.
