India is ready to get an important milestone in its space exploration trip as Indian Air Force group captain Shubanshu Shukla is ready to become the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS).
Set for May 2025, the mission will mark the return to India’s human spaceflight after an interval of over four decades since Rakesh Sharma’s historic visit in 1984.
Who is Shubhanshu Shukla?
Born on October 10, 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla is a prestigious fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force. Bachelor of National Defense Academy, he was commissioned on 17 June 2006 in the fighter stream.

What experiments will he conduct in ISS?
During his 14-day stay on ISS as part of AXIOM Mission-4, Shukla will conduct at least seven scientific experiments.
One of the major experiments involves studying the existence and gene expression of tardigrades, also known as a bear of water, in microgravity. These micro -organisms are famous for their flexibility in extreme conditions, and the purpose of the study is to understand their revival, existence and reproduction in space.
Another important experiment focuses on the viability of growing crops in space. This research is important for future long -term space missions, as it examines permanent food production in microgravity environment.
