New Delhi. The country’s capital Delhi is struggling with suffocating pollution. Air quality has again reached “lethal” levels. AQI has gone above 450 in many areas of the capital. To get rid of this problem, people are forced to buy expensive air purifiers. At the same time, a Delhiite has done such a miracle that people have started calling him “Jugaadu Scientist” on social media. This person made a DIY (Do It Yourself) air purifier by spending only Rs 2000. And the surprising thing is that this machine reduces the AQI of the room from 350 to 50 in just 15 minutes.
A user named Shukrant 25 has posted photos of his unique jugaad on Reddit and has also shared a post explaining how he prepared a cheap air purifier at home. He wrote, “I made my own personal air purifier for ₹2000 and it works better than my Philips purifier.” What happened next, the post went viral within no time. At first people thought it was a joke, but when they saw the pictures and details, everyone was shocked.
How to make an air purifier worth Rs 2000
The Reddit user told that he has made this device with the help of a 150mm exhaust fan, HEPA filter, some cardboard and a wire switch. This cost him Rs 2000. Bought exhaust fan for ₹750. He spent ₹1000 on buying HEPA filters from Amazon, cardboard and glue gun for ₹150 and switches, regulators and wires worth ₹65. It looks like a school science project, but its creator claims that the effect is no less than that of a branded purifier. According to the user, he installed it in a 12×12 feet room and the AQI went from 400 to 50 in just 15 minutes. A good air purifier is available for at least Rs 15,000.
Desi Jugaad goes viral on Reddit
As soon as this post went on Reddit, hundreds of comments and thousands of upvotes started pouring in. One user wrote, “Brother, make a tutorial video on this, we should also make it.” Another said, “Air purifiers are not rocket science, just pass the air through the right filters. The difference is that you did it, everyone else is just talking.” Some people even suggested that this person start his own YouTube channel or hold a workshop in Delhi so that people can learn that one can breathe clean air even without expensive gadgets.
People even called it “Delhi’s Desi Innovation” and “India’s Elon Musk Movement”. When big brands are selling air purifiers ranging from ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 25,000, a Delhiite proved for ₹ 2000 that “if needed, innovation makes its own way.” This Reddit user has shown that innovation does not have to be expensive, all that is needed is true need and innovative thinking. Now people on social media are calling him “Delhi’s Jugadu Genius”. Many people are saving his post so that they can try it themselves.
What is an air purifier?
Air purifier is a device that removes harmful particles like dust, smoke, pollen, odor, bacteria and viruses present in the air, so that you can breathe clean air.

How does an air purifier work?
There are mainly two things in an air purifier. Filter system and fan. First of all, the fan installed inside the machine sucks the dirty air from the room. This air is full of dust, smoke and smell. Pre-Filter is the first filter which catches large particles like hair, pieces of dust or hair etc.
After this comes the HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter). This is what actually cleans the air. It traps very small particles (up to 0.3 microns) PM2.5 and PM10, which are the most prevalent pollutants, fine dust particles, pollen and some bacteria and viruses. HEPA filter removes up to 99.97% of fine particles from the air.
It is also equipped with an Activated Carbon Filter. This filter absorbs odors and gases present in the air, such as cigarette smoke and cooking odors. This filter makes the air fresh and odorless. The air becomes completely clean after passing through all the filters. Now the same air is released back into the room through the fan.
Suppose you add tadka in the kitchen. Now smoke and smell spread in the room. The fan of the air purifier will draw that air inside. Pre-filter will prevent smoke and larger particles. HEPA filter will remove fine oil and dust particles. The carbon filter will absorb the odor of the tempering. Within 10–15 minutes the entire room will be filled with clean and fresh air.
How much time does the air purifier take to clean the air?
It depends on the size of the room and the capacity of the machine. Generally, it takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to clean the air of a 20×20 feet room. The higher the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of the machine, the faster it cleans the air.
