Parts of Antarctica, known for their icy landscapes, are becoming increasingly green due to extreme heat waves, according to recent research. According to CNN, this change has raised concerns about the future of the continent.
Scientists from the University of Exeter, the University of Hertfordshire and the British Antarctic Survey used satellite images and data to study growing vegetation on the Antarctic Peninsula, which is warming much faster than the global average, the publication said.
The research found that plant life, especially mosses, has increased more than tenfold over the past 40 years. In 1986, vegetation covered less than 0.4 square miles of the peninsula. But by 2021 it had increased to about 5 square miles.
Antarctica’s greening has accelerated, especially between 2016 and 2021 as the region’s warming rate has accelerated.
Although much of Antarctica is covered in ice, snow and rocks, the presence of green areas is a significant change. Thomas Rowland, one of the researchers at Exeter, pointed out that climate change is reaching even the most remote parts of the Earth.
“Our findings confirm that the reach of the impacts of anthropogenic climate change knows no bounds, as even on the Antarctic Peninsula – its most extreme, remote and isolated ‘wilderness’ region – the landscape is changing, And these effects are visible from space,” Thomas Rolland told the publication.
Why is this worrying?
Increasing green cover can create more soil, making the area suitable for invasive species, which can harm local wildlife. Greening may also reduce Antarctica’s ability to reflect sunlight because darker plants absorb more heat.
Scientists believe this process will accelerate as the climate continues to warm, causing more dramatic changes to the region’s landscape. Future studies aim to investigate how plants inhabit newly exposed lands as glaciers melt and further retreat.
