The Centre for Advanced Materials Science (ACMS), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Metals hosted the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Academic Workshop on ‘Role of Technological Advancements and Standardization in Powder Metallurgy Processes and Products’.
The workshop was attended by industry experts, academia and researchers who discussed the latest advancements in powder metallurgy and the important role of standardization.
Professor Anish Upadhyaya, Head of ACMS at IIT Kanpur, delivered the welcome address. He served as the workshop coordinator.
Kantesh Balani, Head, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur, and Professor AK Singh, Faculty-in-Charge, Technopark, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of continuous innovation and adherence to standards in advancing the field of powder metallurgy.
Swagat Bhandari, nodal in-charge of the newly-established Translational Research Initiative at IIT Kanpur, highlighted strategies to coordinate activities to ensure seamless translation from the research or prototype stage to industrial adoption and production.
Informative presentations were given by representatives from leading industries in the morning session, stated a press release issued by IIT Kanpur.
Among those present were Mahesh Nipanikar, Technical Director, Hoganas India, V. Sadaphal and S. Biradar, Deputy General Managers, Amitech Technologies India Pvt. Ltd., and Rajesh Bhatia, CEO, RVB Shorelube Industries Pvt. Ltd.
The session was followed by a visit to the ACMS facilities, which gave the participants a closer look at the cutting-edge research being carried out at IIT Kanpur, the release said.
While in the afternoon session, the 21st Technical Meeting of the Sectional Committee on Powder Metallurgy Materials and Products (MTD 25) was held.
Meanwhile, a series of six technical lectures were organised in the evening session which was attended by over 70 students, staff and faculty participants.
G. Ram Sai Kumar, Scientist and Deputy Director, Metallurgical Engineering Department, BIS started the session with a lecture on “Role and Standardization of BIS in Powder Metallurgy”.
He stressed the importance of standardization to maintain consistent quality and support innovation in powder metallurgy.
Dr. Mayadhar Debta, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar spoke on “Development of non-ferrous alloys through powder metallurgy” with special focus on strategic applications.
Other speakers in the session included Dr. Pradyut Sengupta (Senior Scientist, CSIR-IMMT), Dr. Gururaj Telsang (Scientist E, ARCI Hyderabad), Dr. Deepak Patnaik (Principal Scientist, CSIR-CECRI), Prof. Anish Upadhyaya (IIT Kanpur) and Anshu Bhatia (Managing Director, Camstar Defence India Pvt. Ltd.).
