Professor Amit Patra will hold the post till the regular incumbent takes charge or until further notice, whichever is earlier.

Amit Patra, Director of IIT Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU), has assumed additional responsibility as the Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur today, December 31, 2024. Patra will hold the post until the regular incumbent takes charge of the office or until further notice, whichever is earlier. He is currently a Professor in the higher academic grade salary.
Patra completed B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur in 1984, followed by M.Tech in 1986 and PhD in 1990. He was also a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the institute since 1987.
Between 2018 and 2019, Professor Patra was a Senior Visiting Research Scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He has also been serving as Honorary Assistant Professor there.
He was also Professor-in-Charge of the Advanced VLSI Design Lab at IIT Kharagpur from 2004 to 2007, in which he helped expand the chip design activity of the lab as well as set up an advanced test facility. According to the KGP Chronicle, during his tenure, the laboratory received funding of approximately US$1 million from major multinational corporations such as National Semiconductor, Intel, Synopsys, etc.
He was also the recipient of the Indian National Academy of Engineering’s Young Engineer Award in 1996. He received the Young Teachers Career Award from the All India Council for Technical Education in 1995 as well as the Samsung Innovation Award in the same year.
At present, Prof. Patra’s research interests include power management circuits, mixed-signal VLSI design, battery management systems, diagnostics and forecasting in industrial and biomedical systems.
