A medical college student from Odisha was allegedly raped by unidentified people in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, police said on Saturday.
The victim, a resident of Jaleshwar, is a second year student of a private medical college in Durgapur. Her family members said the incident took place outside the college campus on Friday night when she had gone out for dinner with a friend. Her mother alleged that the attack, which she described as gang rape, happened around 10 pm.
The student’s father said, “We came here this morning and lodged a complaint with the police. I had heard that the college has performed well academically, and that is why we have sent our daughter here to study medicine.”
Investigation and Timeline
The state police has started investigating the matter. An official from Durgapur’s New Township police station revealed that preliminary investigation revealed that the student and her friend left the campus between 8 pm and 8.30 pm on Friday. It was also revealed that the accused persons had demanded money from the student to return her mobile phone.
An officer confirmed that the victim is currently undergoing treatment at the college hospital and has given her statement to the police. After contacting their daughter’s friends, her parents went to Durgapur on Saturday morning.
Abhishek Gupta, DC (East), Durgapur Commissionerate, issued a brief statement: “The matter is sensitive. The investigation is being conducted taking all aspects into consideration. As soon as more information becomes available, it will be shared.”
“The friend left her alone when three unidentified men arrived there. They snatched her phone and took her to the forest outside the campus, where they raped her. She was threatened with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident,” the officer said.
“We spoke to the victim’s friend last night. We are trying to find CCTV footage. A forensic team will visit the spot to collect evidence,” the officer said.
Separately, a team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) reached the hospital in Durgapur to meet the victim and her parents.
