Many of these public Wi-Fi networks are not properly safe, making them easy targets for hackers and scammers. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in), which works under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, has released this new reminder. In the advisory, citizens have been warned for doing sensitive activities like banking or online shopping on public Wi-Fi networks.
Lack of security in public Wi-Fi
CERT-in reported that cyber criminal can easily hack unseeded connections on public Wi-Fi, causing users’ data theft and financial losses. The government has advised people to avoid transactions or entering personal information when they join such network.
Government agency shared safety tips
As part of its awareness campaign, CERT-IN has also shared some important safety practice tips. It said that never click on link or attachment to unknown sources, use long and strong passwords for all online accounts and regularly place backup of important files on the outer drive. The government agency said that if proper precautions are not taken, then easy activities like checking email or logging in social media account on public Wi-Fi can also be at risk.
