The symbol of Hyderabad, Charminar is famous for its unique architecture, and its design inspiration comes from the ancient Ibrahim Mosque located in the Golconda Fort. According to historians, the four minarets of the Charminar, built in 1591, are an extension of the same architectural style that can be seen in the Ibrahim Mosque built by Ibrahim Qutb Shah between 1550–1580. This mosque, which is about 40-50 years old, is still considered a wonderful example of Qutub Shahi heritage and as it is located inside the Golconda Fort, tourists can admire it from outside.

The Ibrahim Mosque, built before the construction of Charminar, is the historical heritage whose architectural style inspired the design of Charminar. This link in the glorious history of Hyderabad is a testimony to the rich cultural heritage of the city. There is a mystery behind the design of Charminar. Charminar was built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.
Surprisingly, the architecture of this iconic monument is inspired by the Ibrahim Mosque located in the Golconda Fort. According to historian Zahid Sarkar, this fact is mentioned in the book Murakka-e-Hyderabad. Just as there are two minarets in the Ibrahim Mosque, carrying forward the same style, four grand minarets were built in the Charminar.
Historical importance of Ibrahim Mosque
The Ibrahim Mosque was built by Ibrahim Qutb Shah, the fourth Sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, during 1550–1580. This mosque is located in the upper part of Golconda Fort, hence it was named Ibrahim Mosque. It is about 40–50 years older than Charminar and is considered an excellent example of Qutub Shahi architecture.
How to reach Ibrahim Masjid
This mosque is located in the premises of Golconda Fort, common tourists can see the mosque from outside, but are not allowed to enter inside. To see the fort one has to take a general ticket, which costs around Rs 25 for Indian citizens. You can easily reach here by bus, auto or private vehicle, although parking charges have to be paid for private vehicles. These historical heritages of Hyderabad still present a glimpse of the glorious culture of the Qutub Shahi Empire. Both Charminar and Ibrahim Mosque are important pillars of the city’s architecture and history.
