During his recent visit to India, HT Digital caught Robert Reddy, St. Louis University (SLU), with the interim vice -president of enrollment management at the USA. He talked about the university’s strong relationship with Indian students, popular STEM programs, scholarship offerings, and how SLU feels international students at home.
Here are parts of that interview:
How does SLU separate itself from other American universities, especially for international students?
Reddy: SLU is a Catholic Jesuit University, but you do not need to be Catholic or religious to study here. What separates us is our commitment to Kura Personalis – Care of the whole person. Education in SLU is not only about academics, but also about personal, spiritual and emotional development. We focus on the nutrition of persons responsible globally.
Tell us about SLU’s growing relationship with India?
Reddy: About five years ago, we made a focused effort to internationalize our campus. India was one of our first major outreach markets. Today, international students make about 20% of our students, and most of them are from India. We now have more than 2,000 Indian students in our two campuses – St. Louis and Madrid.
What are the support systems to help Indian students customize and flourish?
Reddy: We do not believe what international students want – we ask them. For example, Indian students told us that the celebration of cultural programs was important to them. Now, our Holi celebrations have become major campus-wide events, growing from more than 500 to 1,100 participants, including non-Indian students. The surrounding area also has strong Indian community support – a new Indian supermarket has been opened only near the campus, and we have also added Indian cuisine to our food options.
Which educational programs are the most selecting Indian students in SLU?
Reddy: At the graduate level, which sees more Indian enrollment, the most popular programs are in STEM areas – computer science, data analytics, cyber security, AI and engineering. Public health and project management are also in demand. Graduate interests including health science and humanities are more diverse.
What kind of results are the students watching post-graduation?
Reddy: More than 90% of eligible students secure opt posts after graduation. The degree perfection rate is also higher, well above 90%. We are proud of our employer satisfaction, which is also more than 90%. These are strong indicators that our graduates are ready and perform well.
What is the cost of study in SLU, and what scholarships are available?
Reddy: Most master’s programs cost a total of $ 42,000, which can be completed in three to four semesters. Many students prefer a quick 13 -month track to reduce living expenses. We provide more than 10% to 40% of tuition to merit-based scholarships. While the top bracket is competitive, many students get aid in the 15–25% range.
Any new financial initiative in the pipeline?
Reddy: Yes, starting this decline, we are conducting a work program for students of about 165 international master. The program allows them to work 8-10 hours a week in the campus to help them in life expenses. This is not to change the scholarship but to reduce the costs of a few days.
What is campus life in SLU?
Reddy: SLU Saint Louis is located in Missouri, a middle -sized American city that provides everything from cultural and professional opportunities to excellent medical facilities. It is quite large to provide resources, but is very small that does not feel heavy. Students can easily find Indian grocery items, restaurants and community groups, making it easier to adjust and feel at home.
