Chabahar (Chabahar Port) is the most important project in Iran in India. India has made significant invested in the development of Chabahar port, especially in the martyr Beheshti Terminal. India has promised to invest $ 85 million (about 7.5 billion rupees) in this terminal. Also, Cranes and other equipment have been provided to operate the port. Chabahar Baz has also provided a rigorous gateway to the port. Gives India a business access to Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eurasian countries. It is also able to compete with the Chabahar-Jahedan rail project connecting the Gwadar Port of China.
International North-South Transport Corridor is a 7,200 km long multimode transport corridor. It is being built for the transportation of goods between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe. Chabahar port is an important part of this corridor. This project will help strengthen India’s economy and increase regional impact. This corridor (INSTC) has not yet been completely operational. It is currently constructed, but some parts are being used.
Historically Iran met an important part of India’s crude oil requirements (about 12%before 2019). However, this import has dropped significantly due to US sanctions. Despite this, there is a constant discussion on the possibility of updating energy cooperation between the two countries.
Delay in projects
Military conflict and instability in the region may delay the construction and operation of important projects such as Chabahar port and Chabahar-Jahdan Rail Project. Due to security concerns, Indian employees working on these projects may have to be removed. As recently, an attempt has been made to remove Indian citizens from Iran under Operation Indus. This can stagger the trust of investors, which will affect future investment.
Trade and economic influence
Conflict can cause disruptions in seals (such as the Red Sea and Suez Canal) in the region, leading to an increase in shipping costs by 40–50 percent. This will affect India’s imports and exports. Crude oil prices may increase. If the war increases, crude oil prices in the international market can go above $ 100 per barrel. Due to which petrol, diesel and LPG will become expensive in India. Trade between Iran and India may also be affected. Trade of dried fruits, chemical, cement, salt and fuel products will be affected. Inflation may increase because transportation will become expensive and the prices of goods will increase. Indian rupee may be under pressure and it can weaken in the international market. Which will increase economic pressure on India.
