She further added, “In addition, a healthy lifestyle also contributes significantly to better reproduction and cervical health. This includes stopping smoking, as smoking is linked to a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Complete, balanced meals that include plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as lean proteins and healthy fats, are essential for the hormonal balance that promises a successful reproduction. Managing weight through proper nutrition and physical activity is an important intervention for individuals as obesity is linked to the development of cervical cancer.

“It is also recommended to consider receiving the HPV vaccination, which people aged 9-26 should take to prevent HPV infection and reduce the risk of cervical cancer,” they advised. Detecting any problems early can greatly improve outcomes and contribute to the overall health of your reproductive system. Regular cervical cancer screening, including Pap smears and HPV testing, are important because they can detect abnormal changes in the cervix early, allowing timely intervention. Additionally, it is important to promote the HPV vaccine to eligible candidates, as it significantly reduces the risk of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases.
  2. Practice safe sex to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can have an impact on reproductive health. It is also important to encourage safe sex practices such as condom use to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HPV.
  3. A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise and avoiding tobacco, has been linked to better fertility and cervical health. Bringing her expertise, Dr. Sampada Desai, Consultant, Gynecological Oncosurgery at PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Center in Khar, said, “Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. Most cancers are caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. Infection with a cancer-causing HPV type is necessary for the initiation of cancer. However, not everyone who is infected with HPV gets cancer.

He revealed, “In most women, the infection clears up during periods. Many lifestyle factors play an important role in whether a person gets an HPV infection or has persistent HPV infection. Smoking, exposure to environmental toxins, sedentary lifestyle and coinfection with sexually transmitted viruses increase the chances of persistent HPV infection and hence cancer. A link also exists between diet and cervical cancer. Overall a balanced diet boosts immunity and helps remove HPV infection from the body. A diet rich in sugar, sodium, and saturated fatty acids increases chronic inflammation and increases the likelihood of persistent HPV infection. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, peas and antioxidants reduces the risk of cervical cancer.

Highlighting that obesity increases the risk of cervical cancer, he said, “The exact cause is not known. This possibly has an adverse effect on cervical cancer screening. Exercise helps maintain weight which indirectly protects against cervical cancer. Don’t forget that two important ways to prevent cervical cancer are through cancer screening and vaccination of eligible populations. According to CDC guidelines, all women should be screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test once every three years from the age of 21 until they reach the age of 65. If co-testing with HPV the screening period can be extended to once in 5 years. HPV testing will be introduced only after 30 years. Prevention is always better than cure. Vaccinating girls and boys aged 9-25 will significantly reduce the risk of getting HPV infection. Therefore, being aware, adopting a good lifestyle, getting tested and vaccinating the eligible population is the way to eliminate cervical cancer.
